The following are our top tips provided by our waterproofing expert for your basement. Following these will stop basement floods and leaks.
Check out your gutters
The majority of issues with water build-up around the edge of a house occurs due to the improper drainage of water off your roof.
So make sure that your gutters are clear of debris and all drain pipes are properly directed away from your house. Gutters need to be installed on every roofline which is parallel to the ground, that includes windows and doors.
The next time there is a thunderstorm, grab your umbrella and go outside, and take a good long look at your gutters. Gutters that are too small will not be able to move the water fast enough down the drainage pipes. So if you see an overflow, you either have a built-up of debris, or your gutters are not big enough.
Installing well covers on your windows
During the winter, snow could start to build up inside any exposed window wells, which will eventually result in a leak in your basement. During the summer, intense rainstorms will pool water to a few inches in a matter of a few minutes. A properlyfitting window well coverwill protect your well from the likes of rain, snow, and debris build-up and stop any basement leaks.
Checking the seams of your basement windows
Badly installed basement windowswill result in basement leaks if your window well is exposed to too much water, or if you don’t have a window well cover installed. Check for any cracks around the edges and seal them with caulk if necessary. Older windows will often leak at the seams, even when there are no visible cracks present!
